Tea Vendor Takes on India's Largest Bank; Wins Case

BENGALURU: Many of us just ignore the legal issues and let them conveniently slip away from us. The major reason behind this reluctance is the time and money that we spend on running the case. However one has to be fortunate to pick up a right lawyer for the related case. So here goes the story of a man who took on the lawyers of India’s largest bank, the State Bank of India (SBI) and won the case, reports indiatimes.

In 2011, Rajesh Sakre, a tea vendor in Bhopal, had 20, 000 in his bank account, wherein he withdrew a sum of 10, 800. He then noticed that his account balance was swiped down to nil. Following this, Sakre approached the SBI Branch and complained about issue. But the bank manager denied the complaint and instead Sakre was blamed for clutter. As a last attempt he approached the SBI Head Quarters in Mumbai, which also failed to address his concerns.

This helplessness led Sakre to file a District Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum Case against the bank. Sakre could not afford to hire a lawyer as we see that his savings were swept by the bank. Despite having education only till class 5; he chose self-representation and he himself argued for his case against the lawyers of State Bank of India.

After four years, on 16th June, court’s judgment came out in favor of Sakre and ordered the bank to reimburse 9, 200 with 6 percent interest added with 10, 000 compensation for mental stress that the customer has faced and 2, 000 for legal expenses.
