In some places, Holika Dahan is considered a very important chapter of Holi, where on Holi eve, people celebrate around a bonfire and offer their prayers to god. The legend related to this occasion has its roots connected to Holika from Vaishnava theology.

Once there was a demon king named Hiranyakashipu, who received a boon to be immoral and thus became arrogant wanted to rule the world. His son Prahlad was a blind devotee to Lord Vishnu. The king tried prohibiting his son from praying Vishnu, but failed. Holika was Hiranyakashipu’s demon sister, who was once rewarded with a shawl to be protected from fire. The king ordered his sister to sit on fire with Prahlad to prove that God can’t help him. But on contrary, Lord Vishnu saved him and Holika and the evil power was burnt to ashes. Hence Holi is believed to be an end to evil powers and celebrated as new beginning of pious and holy thoughts.
