Strict Law Against Honour Killings: A Need Of The Hour In India

Bangalore: Violence in the name of “honour” is becoming widespread in India. Perpetrators involved in such cases often feel proud after committing those heinous murders, as though the honour of their families is reinstated by their grievous acts. With many cases of such outrageous crimes increasing, various sections of the society in the country are demanding for an enactment of stringent laws to abolish such inhuman acts and also to punish those culprits involved, reports TOI.

A study conducted by United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) on gender laws has strongly demanded for a stricter and separate law against honour killings so that, those khap panchayats and families involved in oppressing couples are given the right punishment for taking the law in own hands.

Author Kirti Singh while urging for a strong law against honour killings, said, "Violent, abusive, barbaric acts occur even before killing. There is no law to address this. It is urgently required," reports TOI.

"This should be made an election issue. There has to be a separate law to address honour killings," added Sayeeda Hameed , Planning Commission member.
