Some Unknown Facts about Late Jayalalithaa


BENGALURU: Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, J Jayalalithaa took her last breath in Chennai on the eve of 5th December after being under treatment for 74 days. She was widely known in Tamil Nadu as ‘Amma’. Whole country, including cine stars and politicians mourned the death of this charismatic and revered political figure and the person who changed the face of Tamil Nadu politics. She gave hope to women that they can reach anywhere, no matter wherever they came from. Here are some unknown facts about Amma listed by The Economic Times.

She was introduced into politics from cine world by MGR and after his death she single-handedly led his party AIDMK. In the 1989 state elections, she won 27 seats and become the first women in history of Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly to be leader of opposition. During his first tenure as CM of Tamil Nadu in 1991, she took only 1 as salary. She refused to accept pay check by saying that she is a public servant and has plenty other sources of income.

AIDMK Supremo Jayalalithaa remained unmarried for whole life, but she has an adopted son named as Sudhakaran. Jayalalithaa organised a lavish marriage for her son in 1995 in which over 1, 50,000 guests were invited. IT department estimates the cost of the wedding to 10 crore. This marriage is listed in the Guinness Book of World Records.

Jayalalithaa held the chair as CM of the state without any portfolio. O. Paneerselvam (current CM of Tamil Nadu) handled all the portfolios. Amma made history in Tamil Nadu politics by acquiring the chair of the Chief Minister for a second consecutive term. She was re-elected as CM in Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly Elections 2016. No one had ever achieved this feat in the history of the state.
