Social Reformers Who made a Mark in the Indian History


Raja Ram Mohan Roy

The Father of modern India, the founder of the Brahmo Samaj (a greatest Socio-religious movement), Raja Ram Mohan Roy has played a major role in the abolition of social evils like the Sati system. He gave the importance of education for girl children and also instilled the learning of English language, Science and technology. Mughal Empire honored him with the title “Raja”.     

 Raja Ram Mohan Roy was born in a Bengal Brahmin family on 22nd May 1772 A.D. He was a great scholar of Sanskrit, Persian and English. His great love for knowledge led him to study Jainism, Sufism, and has also translated his learning’s in English and Bengali. He preached the concept of one God.

Roy was the first feminist in India. He was against the caste system, he fought for equal rights for women and right for widows’ remarriage. In the year 1829, the government  finally abolished Sati system in the country and his campaigns were finally rewarded.     

He stood for modern education, introduction of English education for the propagation of science in India and modernization of Indian society.

His famous quote says,”There is only one God, None equals Him. He has no end. He is present in all living beings”. This quote brought a Universal brotherhood in the people, leaving behind their caste, creed and religion.

Raja Ram Mohan Roy died in the year 1833 in Britan, succumbing to meningitis and was later cremated  in Bristol, Britan.
