Six Years After 26/11: Is India Ready To Face Terror Attacks?

BANGALORE: Explosions, Ruthless Killings, Disaster define 26/11, the black day in the history of Mumbai. It has been 6 years since the series of 12 coordinated shooting and bombing attacks killing 164 people and wounding at least 308 that lasted 4 days carried out by the Pakistani members of Lashkar-e-Taiba. Mumbai Attacks This is the biggest terrorist attack in the history of India and also the complete failure of the Indian security as well.

In spite of calculating the names and number of attacks why don’t we figure out the weak points and strengthen them, so that the history does not repeat itself.  The very first thing is to recognize where India stands in terms of security today.

Former Union home secretary G K Pillai and counter-terrorism specialist Ajai Sahni explains what ails in the society, “Some progress has been achieved, but the fact is India is incapable of preventing another 26/11,” reports DNA. “I would say we are just 40 percent better prepared with respect to 2008. The main lacunae are heavy police shortage and poorly trained men and thus a weak policing system, the first responder to both prevent and respond,” added Pillai.

India ranks second in population, but lacks far behind in terms of social security. It seems there are 130 policemen per lakh compared to 300-600 per lakh ratio in developed countries. And considerable amount out of them are dedicated in the VIP duties. It is irony, what is the point of giving Z, Y or X security to certain class when commoners are not safe walking on the road today?
