Selling Minor Girls for Domestic Help Witnesses an Alarming Rise in India

Bangalore: Child trafficking is not something new to India, but the alarming increase in the number of Kids subjected to this torture has lead to serious discussions. The reasons behind this pathetic situation are many-from poverty to the growing demand for laborers. Many fraud placement agencies are targeting poor minor girls, as reported by Priyali Sur of CNN-IBN.

Take the case of Mamuni, a tea garden vendor, who had lost her daughter for more than two years and was desperately searching for her.  She decided she would go home only after finding her daughter.

"I will not go back home without my daughter," said Mammuni, to Priyali Sur of CNN-IBN.

This led CNN-IBN and NGO Bachpan Bachao Aandolan join a police raid and they were successful in finding several minor girls along with their male agents. They were surprised to find girls of all ages and some of them were just around 7 years old.

However Mamuni was able to find Dolon, the agent who brought her daughter to Delhi on pretext of getting her a job. The agent was taken to the police station, after severe questioning he spilled the beans, revealing the girl is working as a domestic maid in Kothi. "I have brought three or four girls so far. I get paid Rs 7000 to 8000 for each girl," he said.
