BANGALORE: In what could be a landmark judgment, the Supreme Court quashed the ordains of Section 66A of the IT act that empowers the government to squish  the freedom of speech and also to arrest of a person in case of posting offensive content on websites, reports TOI.

What is section 66A all about?

Section 66A commands the authority to the government to punish those who sends or posts any information from a computer resource, knowing it to be false or offensive or has some controversial issues pertaining to it. . The information just spread in case to cause aggravation, inconvenience, danger, insult or obstruction will be imprisoned for a term of three years extent with fine as a punishment.

Section 66A violates Article 19(1)(a) of Constitution

The Supreme Court verdict is such that the section 66A of the IT act is contradictory to Article 19(1)(a) which states the constitution guaranteeing freedom of speech and expression.
