Quick Facts About the New Successor of the Throne: Paneerselvam

BENGALURU: After an unexpected death of the Chief Minister of Tamilnadu Jayalalitha on Monday midnight, O Paneerselvam sworn in as the Chief Minister. This brings us to a major question––Will the Sworn in Chief Minister live up to Amma and into the hearts of Tamil Nadu? To answer the question, let’s have a look at the political journey of Paneerselvam.

The economic times gives a better clarity into the political journey of O Paneerselvam. Paneerselvam is known as OPS among the people, and was considered as one of the most trusted aides of Amma. His political reign started as the chairman of Periyakulam Municipality during the year 1996 to 2001. Earlier, he also held the post of Chief Minister for two years. From October 11, 2016, he was in charge of handling the portfolios that were assigned to Jayalalitha.

Dating back to 2001, when the disproportionate asset case was charged against Jayalalitha, Paneerselvam assumed the interim charge of a Chief Minister. But Paneerselvam refused to sit in Jayalalitha’s chair and chose to sit in an empty chair which was placed right next to Amma’s chair. In 2014, once again, he became the head of the state during the absence of Jayalalitha for the disproportionate asset case. Later, he also resigned from the throne on Jayalalitha’s return as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu.

On December 06th 2016, Paneerselvam took oath as the Chief Minister following Jayalalitha’s death. Paneerselvam had also carried the photo of Jayalalitha in his pocket during his oath.
