Poltical Veterans Who Now Stand As Prime Accused

JAYALALITHA JAYARAM:

The latest ongoing sensation of Jayalalitha’s conviction came as a shock to the country. On September 27th 2014, a verdict by a special court in Bangalore has pronounced Jayalalitha guilty of amassing wealth of 66.65 crore which is disproportionate to her known sources of income during her first term in office as Chief Minister.

The court has sentenced her to four-year imprisonment and 100-crore fine. This kind of verdict was unimaginable when the case started 18 years ago.

This verdict comes as a rude shock to the ruling AIADMK in Tamil Nadu, casting a doubt over ‘Amma’s’ (as she is known) political future ahead of the 2016 Assembly polls. Jayalalitha also happens to earn the distinction of being the first serving Chief Minister in the country to be found guilty under Prevention of Corruption Act.

Despite the fact that she is accused of corruption, many in Tamil Nadu are disappointed about the verdict.
