Political Assassinations That Shook The World


Indira Gandhi: Indira Gandhi, the 3rd Prime Minister of India was the second female head of government in the world after Sirimavo Bandaranaike of Sri Lanka.

Indira remains as the world’s second longest serving female Prime Minister and was the only woman Prime Minister of India till date. On 31st October 1984, she was killed by two of her bodyguards, Satwant Singh and Beant Singh with their service weapons at her Safdarjung Road, New Delhi residence.

Benazir Bhutto: Benazir Bhutto, the 11th Prime Minister of Pakistan, was the first woman elected to lead a Muslim state. She was Pakistan’s first and to date the only female Prime Minister.

On 27th December 2007, Benazir was killed while leaving a campaign rally for the Pakistan People’s Party at Liaquat National Bagh in the city of Rawalpindi.The attack occurred while leaving the rally at her white Toyota Land Cruiser, Bhutto stood up through its sunroof to wave to the crowds. At this point, a gunman fired shots at her and subsequently explosives were detonated near the vehicle killing around 20 people. Bhutto was critically wounded and was rushed to Rawalpindi General Hospital but she was declared dead.
