People In These 10 Indian States Have More Mobile Phones Than Toilets

BANGALORE: Most of the people in India—both men and women—defecate in the open, according to a report; surprisingly, a large section of people, more than half of India's 1.2 billion population, have no toilets at their homes but have mobile phones.

Only 46.9 percent of the 246.6 million households in India have lavatories while 49.8 percent defecate in the open, the remaining 3.2 percent use public toilets, as of 2012, reports BBC News.

Besides, India’s soaring pace of open defecation has calamitous consequences. It is uprooting the lives of hundreds of thousands of women and children in India every year and many other people are exposed to deadliest diseases because of open defecation.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has raised his concern regarding sanitation by proclaiming that open defecation will be eliminated by 2019 and it would be one of his government’s top priorities.

Rediff.com's infographic shows that in 13 states in India and 2 Union Territories have more mobile phones per 100 household than toilets. Here is the list:

1. Rajasthan

Rajasthan is India's largest state by area and is well-known for its integrity and culture but shockingly terrible when it comes to proper sanitation facilities. The state has 62.49 percent mobile phones and 34.97 percent toilets per 100 household.

Recently, Hindustan Zinc (HZL), one of the largest global producers of zinc, lead and silver, took the initiative and has already constructed 9,000 toilets out of its planned 30,000 in Rajasthan villages in collaboration with the state government.
