Passport Verifications To Take Less Time With The Introduction Of Police IT

BANGALORE:  The passport verification in the state to be made faster with the introduction of police database, the pilot project materialized this year ‘Police IT’. The city passport office will be first in the country to use the criminal records from police to verify the background of the applicant. This will result in reducing the passport verification time to less than seven days, reports The Economic Times.

This project is a part of larger plan to integrate the database of external ministry’s crime and criminal tracking networking system throughout the country. Since Karnataka police is updated with database the project has stated from Bangalore. The project has been delayed from past ten years due to the lack of interstate database.

With the new project the crime record of the applicant can be track down from any place, no matter where the applicant has applied at. Thus the process of police verification and tracking the criminal records becomes much easier and faster. The passport office itself will be able to access the police database in order to find out the record of the applicant.

"Right now, we do not have the capability to check the police records ourselves. Once the integration happens, we might be able do so directly .It depends on the extent of access we will get -this is currently being decided by the Ministry of External Affairs and the Ministry of Home Affairs," said PS Karthigeyan, regional passport officer.
