Modi's Big Tent To Bring Gandhi and Godse Together

BENGALURU: Modi’s Sab Ka Saath now includes everyone from BJP’s parivar and even extends outside its sphere to include those associated with the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi, from victim to perpetrator, and Sardar Patel who banned the RSS in its wake.

Six decades after Gandhi's assassination Prime MInister is hailing many of Gandhi’s ideals like never before. He conveniently split Gandhi into two: good Mahatma and bad politician as covered by Firstpost. RSS is busy backing BJP’s claim to Patel’s legacy, whereas on the other hand, Modi plans to build Sardar’s gigantic statue. Also the Hindu Mahasabha is petitioning the government to install Godse’s statues across India, while BJP parliamentarian Sakshi Maharaj argues that he be called a patriot. This could be the wicked fulfillment of the utopian dream of the lamb and lion drinking from the same pond.

However, amidst all this chaos as to who among the revered leaders does BJP back, we can find one particular catch. Tushar Gandhi, the great grandson of Mahatma Gandhi points out that there is rise in Modi’s affection for Gandhi. Modi has never really invoked Gandhi’s name in his 12 years tenure as the Chief Minister of Gujarat, as much as he does today. Tushar who was surprised to see Modi posing in front of Mahatma’s statue outside Indian Embassy in Washington, says that, “In this short period of 100 days that he has been the prime minister of India, it seems everything he does is guided by Bapu.”
