Modi to Resign As Gujarat CM, Anandiben to Succeed Him

GANDHINAGAR: Prime Minister-elect Narendra Modi will submit his resignation as Gujarat chief minister to the governor, party sources said.

Before he submits his resignation, Modi will attend a farewell meeting held in his honor by the BJP legislators.

Party sources said that after Modi submits his resignation, BJP legislators will hold a meeting to elect the successor to the PM-elect, appointed as such by President Pranab Mukherjee.

While the BJP has not made an official announcement about who will succeed Modi, party sources said that Anandiben Patel, the revenue minister, was set to be the next chief minister of the state.

The new chief minister, once elected by the legislators, will stake claim to form the government at 6 p.m. Wednesday. Soon after, Modi will resign as the legislator from Maninagar.
