Modi To Head Committee For Nehru's Birth Anniversary Celebration


NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will head the committee to commemorate the 125th birth anniversary of India's first prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru.

Modi will himself chair the committee, said a statement from the prime minister's office.

Home Minister Rajnath Singh, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, Human Resources Development Minister Smriti Irani, Information and Broadcasting Minister Prakash Javadekar and Culture Minister Shripad Yesso Naik have been appointed as ex-offico members of the committee.

Congress Members of Parliament, Mallikarjun Kharge, Ghulam Nabi Azad, Dr Karan Singh, senior journalists and retired bureaucrats are also part the committee.

Union Culture Secretary Ravindra Singh will be the Member Secretary in the committee.

According to the official statement, apart from the full committee, the Prime Minister has also approved the constitution of a National Implementation Committee which will be headed by Home Minister Rajnath Singh.

The statement further said that the first meeting of the committee will take place soon after the Diwali on Oct 23.
