Meet The Teacher Who Swims Across A River To Teach And Educate

Bangalore: It is September 5th and the whole country is celebrating teacher’s day to express love and gratitude to their Guru’s who relentlessly strived to provide them with a bright future.

In Malappuram, Kerala, lives Abdul Mallik a primary school teacher. He is no ordinary teacher, as he swims through water with a tube tied around his waist, shoes in one hand and clothes in a bag just to reach the school. He feels it’s his daily routine and does it every day to get to his work.

Malik who lives on the other side of the river bank uses this route as it takes just 15minutes for him to reach the school. "If I go by bus, it takes me three hours to cover the 12-kilometre distance, but swimming through the river is easier, faster and I reach school on time," says Malik to NDTV.

The students of the school are taken on field trip to swim in the river by Malik. He does this to bring a sense of awareness to the children about the importance of the river and also the need to keep it clean.

Malik enjoys his work, and is loved by the students. As he arrived to the class the children welcomed him with flowers and cards for teachers day, reports Sneha Mary Koshy of NDTV.

To the students of the village, Malik is an idol. A seven year old student, Jahangir said he would become Like Malik Master when he grows up.
