MIT Fab Lab Releases 3 Cool Innovations For India


BANGALORE: A team from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the Vigyan Ashram in Pabal, Maharashtra, called the Fab Lab, came together to build solutions for common problems in rural and urban India thebetterindia.com lists some of them:

Fab Lab was started by Dr Neil Greshenfield, the director of the Center of Bits and Atoms in MIT. According to him, the group is comprised of people who want to help the world and those who “never understood the boundary between physical science and computer science”

Sanitary Pad disposal unit:

Improper disposal of sanitary pads causes all sorts of hygiene and ecological problems, Fab Lab, developed a low cost incinerator unit called WOMA-VIVUS-FAB which can convert used napkins into ash in eight minutes.

Weather Data Logger

The Weather Data Logger records temperature and humidity to help predict the pest control levels, and provide advice to farmers about the process of crop selection. The team plans to collect the materials needed into a low cost do-it-yourself modeling kit for weather data logging.

Low Cost Qualitative Hearing Aid

While many forms of blindness are incurable, the availability of hearing aids has made it possible for a wide swath of deaf people to hear. However, hearing aids are an expensive piece of equipment. Fab Lab has built a low cost hearing aid toolkit to address this problem, and encourages students to build their own devices and to send them their suggestions. The hearing aid kit’s instructions are available in both English and Hindi, and the cost of the raw materials is only Rs110.
