Love: The Most Potent Cause for Murders In India


Haryana, a state notorious for honour killings, does not include among the states where love is the potent killer. States like Kerala (3) and most of the north-eastern states reports less number of love-driven crime. Such crimes were also considerably lesser in Rajasthan and West Bengal (39 each) as against those happening out of vendetta and property disputes.

NCRB data also revealed on causes and reasons of murder in 2012 where states like Bihar reported most number of murders over property disputes. This state also accounted for the highest number of murders over personal disputes (570) and was just after UP in terms of total murders. UP witnessed a total of 4,966 murders followed by Bihar with 3,566 murders last year.

The country till today face the rage of castes and based on this, Assam recorded the highest crimes rate caused due to casteist motives (41), contributing for 56 percent of the total murders in this category.

In Odisha and West Bengal, social evil like dowry took away 415 and 252 lives, respectively. Other states like Andhra Pradesh (167), Maharashtra (130) and Bihar (102) too scored high on dowry deaths. According to the data since 2001, it shows a quick increase in dowry killings from 968 in 2001 to 1,339 in 2011 and 1,458 in 2012.
