Is Kerala's Women Power declining?

Bangalore:  Has literacy become a burden for Kerala? Or is Kerala a place without opportunities especially for women? The most literate state in India, Kerala faces wide range brain drain. Interestingly, the number of women migrating to other states and countries from this state is more than men.

The Kerala Migration Survey which was concluded by 2011 by the Centre for Development Studies reports that for every 100 women in the state, a good number of 33 relocate to other states.

It is clear from the survey that the girls migrating from Kerala are aiming at better opportunities and prospects. 51 women per 100 who chose to make a living outside Kerala are from the 20-24 age category. 69 percent of women who migrate from Kerala to other states are unmarried.

When people from all over the world wish to visit "God’s own country", the Keralites don’t bother to stay back in the place and build a career there. It points at the lack of opportunity within the state.

The famous poet, activist and former chairperson of the Kerala State Women’s Commission, Sugathakumari said “Today’s society is driven by ambition. The younger generation is career-minded; money is an important factor too. It is evident that people will move to better paying jobs and higher standards of living even if it means leaving one’s home. For the job of a housemaid, a woman is paid Rs 5,000 here while the same job fetches Rs 15,000 across the borders,” as IBN live reported.
