India's 8 Erstwhile Royals Who are Vying for the Lok Sabha Seats


BANGALORE: In a democratic country like India, politics indeed lure almost all the sections of the society and its people. Royalty may have been abolished in independent India, but the scions of former princely families continue to rule in their regions via the political route. So, in this ongoing parliamentary election, we have come across many royals who are contesting various seats from different parts of the country. Here are the names of 8 such royals, as listed by Yahoo.

Jyotiraditya Scindia: Erstwhile royal and scion of the Scindia royal family, Jyotiraditya Scindia is a Congress MP and Union Minister of State for Power. He is the grandson of George Jivajirao Scindia, the last ruler of the Maratha princely state of Gwalior. Before venturing into politics, he got a Management Degree from Stanford College in the U.S. and even worked as an investment banker at Merrill Lynch and Morgan Stanley.

In addition, he even worked as an intern with the UN Economic Development Cell and has gained valuable development experience. Of late, his son emerges as the sole campaigner for the election.

Vasundhara Raje Scindia: The royal heiress, Vasundara Raje Scindia is the first women to become the Chief Minister of Rajasthan. It was in the year 1984 when she entered mainstream politics and joined the national working committee of BJP. She was the Vice President of State BJP Yuva Morcha for two years (1984-86). During her tenure as a Chief Minister of Rajasthan in 2003, she was known for her tough ways of running the office. Though separated from her husband early on in their marriage, she still continues to get support for his Dholpur Jat royal family.
