Indian Teenagers Use Google+ More Than Twitter: Survey


BANGALORE: According to a survey conducted by TCS, India’s largest software exporter, social site Facebook is the most preferred when it comes to teenagers. Twitter surprisingly made it to the third spot while Google+ takes the second slot. The survey included 14 cities in India that consisted of 12,365 students from classes 8 to 12.

While around 90 pct of the students favored Facebook and 65 pct vouched for Google+ with twitter coming in third with 44.1pct.  Furthermore the 45.5 pct of those who polled stated the use of the networking sites was mainly utilized for school assignments, reports NDTV.

From the studies point of view, the poll for online resources put Wikipedia at the top with a 63.1 pct followed by PDF’S in second with a 50.9 pct and online videos in third with a 44pct. This segment also witnessed the growth production of e-commerce crossing over 66 pct for online shopping.  The ecommerce poll suggested that Electronic gadgets with a 72pct were the most sought after item purchased online, Books coming in second with 61.2pct followed by tickets in third with 41.3pct.

In relevance to messaging application, WhatsApp holds the highest rating with a 72pct as revealed  by  a survey taken in Mumbai, the survey also suggest that the boys outnumbered the girl was a big  42pct in using the app  .

In terms of security the report stated that around half of the youths’ parents looked into their children’s online activities while a solid 53.2pct of the parents even had access to their social media accounts.

"The need to be constantly aware and always connected, while making informed choices are in the basic DNA of the post-millennial students," said Ajoy Mukherjee, TCS HR global head.

In the context of being updated with current news around the world, traditional TV and print media like newspaper are still retaining the limelight with a 76.3pct, while a 52.7 pct of people have moved on to  online sources. When it comes to the youth, over 20pct of the teenagers have subscribed to newsfeeds while 35.7pct are more attuned to the URL shared on social networking sites.

Those kids that were interviewed affirmed to be spending an average of an hour online on a daily basis, close to three-fourths of them are smartphone users in which nearly half of them use PCs or desktops to access the net.
