Indian Railways to Recruit Young Employees as Station Directors

BENGALURU: The railway ministry has broken all stereotypes by deciding on to appoint young ‘Group A’ officers as ‘Station Directors’ at major railway stations. The decision comes in as a wakeup call to improve the reputation and working capabilities of Indian railways. As reported by the Business Insider website, the ministry took this step to revamp customer satisfaction and enhance the business activities. The ministry also has plans to expand those major railway stations as business and economic hubs.

The newly appointed senior officers will look after the smooth functioning of the whole station by paying attention towards an improved passenger experience and uplifting the commercial activities. According to the current procedures, the junior promotee officers are appointed as station masters, station superintendents, and chief station managers. However, they have no command over the services at the railway station, like ticketing, cleaning, parcel and others. These services come under different departments and the officers have no authority to look after them, but now ministry is planning to authorize these officials to supervise the whole working method.

In the first phase of the process, ministry will appoint 12 ‘A’ category officers as station directors at some important railway stations like Mumbai, Delhi, and Jaipur. These officers will be posted with extra financial and contractual powers along with a cross-functional team of different departments like Electrical, Mechanical, Civil, and Traffic. A senior official elaborated that these extra powers are provided to station directors to ensure single-point accountability. The officers are expected to fully utilize these powers to ensure the improvement in passenger amenities, being attentive and quick to respond on customer services, immediate response to complaints and supervise the commercial workings. This new involvement will be a feather in the cap of railway minister Mr. Suresh Prabhu, who is now a well-known person for his good working to enhance customer services for Indian railway passengers.
