Indian Cities Go the Detroit Way, Most Municipal Bodies Cash Strapped

Bangalore: A journey through any Indian cities be it in the most luxurious car or just the public transportation is equivalent to travelling through a desert on the camel’s back. Most of the cities in the country are filled with potholes, choked drains, overflowing and smelly bins and broken streetlights which add to the awe of the masses. The main reason behind all these hassles are the municipal bodies that are often cash strapped and are not in the position to satisfy the vital needs of the people, reports Surojit Gupta for TOI.

Detroit- the automobile hub of United States was in the news recently as it had filed the largest municipal bankruptcy in the history of the U.S. This news which shocked the entire globe should be an eye opener to various ailing Municipal Corporations existing in India. If this problem is not dealt with urgently, India too will take no time in collapsing like Detroit.

The assessment which was carried out in most of the cities following Detroit disaster put a light on how the mismanagement from the municipals and the absence of autonomy will surely turn cities in the country into a chaotic state.
