India in No Mood to Offer any Respite to Pakistan

BENGALURU: Despite the fact that Pakistan is trying hard to de-escalate the tensions on the border and buy some time, Modi government is no mood to give Pakistan any leeway and is bent on clear verifiable action against terrorism  from Pakistan, particularly in the context of the Mumbai, Pathankot and Uri terror attacks.

The government is firm on its stand that the situation after the surgical strikes cannot move towards any normalcy, until Pakistan takes firm measures and actions against terrorism. The days of cozy engagement with Nawaz Sharif government seems to be over and the only forward for the bilateral ties seems to be concrete steps on part of Pakistan.

The Modi government did look to invest in Sharif’s leadership and the civilian government, but the moves have clearly not paid any dividends, as Pakistan continues with its old merry ways.

The ties were already on the verge of breaking after Pathankot attacks and it all came apart after Sharif upped the ante over Kashmir, and India returned the compliment by accusing Pakistan of stoking the unrest in the valley.

Indian experts read this posturing from Pakistan as typical of its tactics when cornered. If a dialogue process does not yield gains on the anti-terrorism front, risks involved in a surgical strike that could have resulted in an escalation as well as accidents like Indian soldiers being trapped in enemy-controlled territory would not be worth the while.

Having crossed the line that his predecessors did not, PM Modi is looking for concrete steps rather than return to old ways as usual and engage in dialogues with Pakistan, sources said.

The government's focus will be on capitalizing Pakistan's current isolation within SAARC. Despite Pakistan's violent dismissal of the surgical strike, the government is well aware of the fact that there is considerable unease in the Pakistani political and military establishment.
