India Has Highest Number Of Suicides In The World: WHO

BANGALORE: Suicides are becoming an ultimatum for so many people across cultures and societies around the world. It seems to be the only way out for people in distress, be it rich or poor. This is becoming a worry to most governments since the rise in suicide numbers is increasing. In a recent survey released by World Health Organization, India is ranked on top among the most prominent suicide rated countries. India’s suicide rates are higher than those of developed countries like USA and UK. This is really sad because there is no much attention given to check this evil in the society.

General reports show that India has a suicide rate of 20 percent and more for every one lakh population. This is higher than America’s rate which is at 13 percent for every one lakh population. Though the Indian government denies this fact and places India’s suicide rate at only 10 percent, it is still eating away the society.

A clear analyzed report of India’s suicide rate among the states show that the southern states which are more developed than the north has a higher percentage of suicide victims. There also seems to be more suicide among the educated than the poor and farmers.

Southern States: According to World Health Organization, the southern states in India have the highest cases of suicides and among the victims youngsters are more prone to commit suicide. Kerala tops the southern states for the highest suicide rates with over 25 percent, with Tamil Nadu trailing behind it with over 22 percent followed by Karnataka with 17 percent and Andhra Pradesh and Telangana with over 16 percent.
