India Claims 66th Rank in this Year's Global Innovation Index

BENGALURU: World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) has released the latest Global Innovation Index (GII), in partnership with Cornell University and INSEAD. India has much to rejoice about this year’s GII as the country has moved up to the 66th place from last year’s 81. However, for the 6th year in a row, Switzerland has the top position when it comes to the world’s most innovative countries.

India, with a total score of 33.61, is ranked number two behind China for the category of middle-income countries. As for China, it is ranked 25 this year with a score of 50.57. In 2015, China was placed 29th. Though India scored much less than China, there are many positives to take from this year’s index. The GII is based on university rankings, international patent filings as well as the number of scientific publications published from a country in the respective year.

Improvement in university rankings is seen as a major factor which powered India to climb 15 places while patent filings have also significantly contributed to the surge in rankings, this time around. According to the report, "India's positive move is the result of its performance in university rankings, where it comes in second among middle-income economies and 20 overall; and in patents, where it now ranks third among middle-income economies and 37 overall."

Furthermore, on a regional basis, India is now ranked first among Central and South Asian countries followed by Kazakhstan and Iran. Then again, China does not form a part of this region. On the other hand, Pakistan, included in the region, finds itself at the bottom of the stack with an overall ranking of 119.
