INS Visakhapatnam: Things To Know About India's First Stealth Warship


BANGALORE: INS Visakhapatnam, the Indian Navy’s latest destroyer warship, is the first of the stealth destroyers to come under the P15-B project. The warship was launched in Mumbai on 20th April, reports IndiaOne.

Under the P15-B project, three more ships of the same class as INS Visakhapatnam are being built and the whole project costs 29, 340 crores.

The first ship in the P15-B project is named Visakhapatnam while the remaining three are said to be named as INS Pradip, INS Marmagoa and the third one to be named after a port in Gujarat. The names of the ships need to be finalized by the President.

The INS Visakhapatnam is the follow on of P15-A Kolkata class destroyers, with enhanced features and the ships will be made part of Indian Navy in July 2018.

The features of the first stealth warship INS Visakhapatnam are as follows:

# The ship will be 163 meter long propelled by four Ukrainian built Zorya gas turbines and designed in such a way to achieve a speed of 30 knots.

# The ship weighs 7300 tonnes, the INS Visakhapatnam will be the largest destroyer consigned in the country.

# Eight Brahmos Anti-Ship missiles will be loaded on to the ship after it is ready.

# To operate in nuclear, biological and chemical atmosphere the ship is designed with enhanced capability.
