INS Kochi, Stealth Guided Missile Destroyer, Joins Fleet

MUMBAI: India’s naval warship INS Kochi, the second ship of the Kolkata-class Guided Missile Destroyers, was commissioned by Defense Minister Manohar Parrikar at the Mumbai Naval Dockyard. The commissioning stealth guided missile destroyer shot India's defence preparedness in the arm.

The largest India-made warship with a displacement of 7,500 tons and length of 164 metres and 17 metres at the beam is built by Mazagon Dock Ship builders Ltd in Mumbai.

This ship is far more advanced than that on the Delhi class and has more developed state-of-art weapons and sensors. It  also has major improvement for greater sea-keeping, survivability, maneuverability and stealth.

The four gas turbines and improved design looks forward to increasing speeds in excess of 30 knots.

The ship incorporates a vertical launch missile system to combat with long distance shore and sea-based targets.

It  also has the distinction of having Multi-Function Surveillance and Threat Alert Radar to offer info on target to Long Range Surface to Air Missile system.

The ship includes MF STAR and LR SAM systems constructed by DRDO (Defence Research and Development Organization) and Israel Aerospace Industries Ltd. The ship accommodates 76 mm and 30 mm gun mounts to combat airborne and surface threats at medium and close in range.

The ship has room for 40 officers and 350 sailors with ergonomically designed living space.

The ship was built with an investment of over 4,000 Cr apiece. Yet another costlier project worth 29,644 Cr to construct four stealth destroyers at MDL, with the first INS Visakhapatnam is due delivery in 2018-2019.
