IIMs set to Double PG diploma Seats

BENGALURU: IIMs are planning to increase their strength and double the number of seats in near future. If you are planning to appear for CAT next year then this might be just the right time to start preparing for it.

After holding a high level meeting with the directors of IIMS, union HRD mister Prakash Javadekar announced the decision of proposed intake expansion plan. The IIMs are expected to increase the seats from the present capacity of 9,500 to 20,000 for PG Diploma courses. The meeting was held at IIM Shillong, where it was also decided to increase the number of Doctoral students.

No discussions happened on doing away with the reservation in faculty appointments, although a passing mention was made that the social equity principles mentioned in the constitution would be followed. Javadekar made it clear that the government had no plans to make any amendments in the constitution.

According to sources, “Intake will be doubled from the present capacity of 9,000 to 20,000 for PG Diploma courses. However, no deadline has been set for the expansion.”

Javadekar told IIM Directors that increasing the number of Doctoral seats would help resolve the faculty crunch. However, a final decision in this regard would only be taken after the cabinet’s approval.

There was also a consensus on the fact that IIMs will play a crucial role in developing 20 world class universities in India.
