Hindu Population Stands at 79.8 Pct; Muslims at 14.2 Pct: Data


BANGALORE: Muslim population in India has exhibited slow growth in the last decade. Census Data released on August 25 by the Registrar-General and Census Commissioner revealed that the growth rate in the Muslim population has witnessed a decline, reports Firstpost. Analysts are of the view that the figures would fall further in the coming years owing to rising education levels in the sect.

The data on Population by Religious Communities of Census 2011 revealed that there has been a growth of 0.8 pct in the Muslim population. The community accounted for 14.2 pct of the total population with 17.22 crore individuals. On the other hand, Hindu population declined by 0.7 percent and accounted for 79.8 pct with 96.63 crore individuals in the 10-year period between 2001 and 2011.

According to the released census data of 2011, the population of the nations stands at 121.09 crore.

Population of Christians and Jains remained stable in this period. Christian population stood at 2.78 crore contributing 2.3 pct whereas Sikh, Buddhist and Jain accounts for 2.08 crore (1.7 percent), 0.84 crore (0.7 percent), 0.45 crore (0.4 percent) respectively.

Overall, the total population grew by 17.7 pct in the same period.

The data included 6 major religious communities- Hindu, Muslim, Jain, Sikh, Christian and Buddhist, along with 'Other Religions and Persuasions' and 'Religion not stated'.
