Give Us Our Hometown Back: Tibetans to Facebook

Bangalore: In a war of identity and freedom, a non-profit network called Tibettruth has launched an online campaign demanding the social networking giant Facebook to specify the capital of Tibet, Lhasa as a part of Tibet, rather than China, writes Sonia Paul from Mashable.

The NGO in its website, www.tibettruth.com, poses a question to the visitors stating, “Did you know that Facebook only allows its Tibetan users to select an option which states Tibet as being in China for choosing their hometown! We are asking folks to join us in sending a message to Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg to allow Tibetans freedom to select Lhasa, Tibet, as their profile hometown.”

“We are asking that Facebook kindly review its current profile format to enable Tibetans to select, as their hometown Lhasa, Tibet. Currently when Tibetans open an account they are denied that choice and can only select ‘Lhasa, Xizang, China’, an option that endorses the bogus claim that Tibet is part of China,” Tibettruth says.

Tibettruth, calls itself “a not-for-profit network of individuals who support justice, human rights and independence for the peoples of Tibet and East Turkestan.”
