From Vegetable Man to Crorepati: Kripashankar Singh

Transformation Vegetable Vendor to Millionaire

The Special Investigation Team (SIT) had zeroed in on 19 properties belonging to Kripashankar and his family and is in the process of attaching his various properties across the city. How did a vegetable seller with a meager income rise to the glory of a millionaire life.

Back in 1999 when Kripashankar became the Maharashtra minister of state for home, he used to boast of his humble beginning in Mumbi like how he landed in the city with nothing and began selling 'kanda batata' (onions and potatoes). But ten years down the line, the vegetable vendor’s assets worth crores in his affidavit in the 2009 elections and this raised many eyebrows.

Kripashankar hails from a poor family from Sahodarpur, Jaunpur in Uttar Pradesh and has reportedly did his schooling in UP before coming to Mumbai in search of a job in 1971. However, in 2004 he showed his educational qualifications as a graduate but in 2009, he was a Class 12 pass in his affidavit. Singh couldn’t find a permanent job for two years in Mumbai and people known him during his early days in the city say he used to work in a dairy firm and also sold vegetables for a living.
