From Airtel Zero To AIB: A Timeline Of How Net Neutrality Debate Sparked In India


BANGALORE: The topic of net neutrality is dominating the news. But how did it happen? Nearly six months ago, only telcos, interest activists and a few other people were actively discussing the issue but, now.net neutrality has grown into a nation- wide debate.

 During 2014, Airtel announced a new data plan that would charge users for OTT (Over the Top) services like VoIP calls and messages in order to prevent service providers from eating into their core revenue streams. However, the company had to withdraw its plan because of consumer outrage it garnered. 

Airtel said it would wait for a consultation paper to be released in March by the Telecomm Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) and went on to launch Airtel Zero, which would provide some free internet services for users.  Tech.firstpost.com has compiled atimeline of events that led to the intense interest the issue produces today.
