Free Wi-Fi Service for Commuters at Eight Stations in Mumbai

BENGALURU: As part of the ‘Digital India’ campaign initiated under PM Narendra Modi, Union Railway Minister - Suresh Prabhu inaugurated free wi-fi service at eight railway stations in Mumbai. The free wi-fi service has been made available at the following stations— Church gate, Dadar WR, Dadar CR, Bandra, Bandra Terminus, Khar, Lokmanya Tilak Terminus and Kalyan. The minister also inaugurated some other passenger amenities like air-conditioned dormitory, booking counter, foot-over-bridges at different stations of the financial capital. The free wi-fi service at railway stations was launched in the month of May at three other railway stations namely Vijayawada, Raipur and Kacheguda. The service is being provided under ‘Railwire’ in a bid to offer commuters with good internet service.

In order to avail the free wi-fi services, users need to register their mobile numbers on the WiFi provider’s page. Thereafter, they will receive a One Time Password (OTP) via SMS which needs to be entered at the login page. Doing so successfully will enable one to access internet at high speed for the first thirty minutes after which the speed will gradually decrease. The railway authorities who are keeping the service free-of-cost as of now are working on a monetary framework which can be deployed in future.

The railway minister during the inauguration stated that his ministry will continue to work for the development of Indian railways as well as concentrate on the comfort and ease of passengers. The free Wi-Fi service is expected to ease the life of lakhs of passengers that use the Mumbai suburban railway network.
