Fight Against AIDS Witnesses a Remarkable Progress


Bangalore: The deadliest disease, HIV AIDS finally has a fall in its death rates. The previous annual report by United Nations (UN) on HIV, said that there were around 35.3 million people worldwide who were infected with the virus, but the current scenario is different as more number of people are now getting treated.

The death rate of AIDS-affected people fell to 1.6 million in the year 2012, reports Kate Kelland for Reuters. In 2011, the number of deaths was 1.7 million and the year 2005 witnessed the highest number, 2.3 million.

Also, the number of people affected by the disease dropped to 2.3 million in 2012 down from 2.5 million in 2011.

The virus that causes AIDS spreads through blood, breast milk and by semen during sex, but can be controlled with cocktails of drugs known as antiretroviral treatment or therapy.

From 2012 till date, people from poor and middle class countries have got better access to such AIDS drugs.

The UN report said that since 2001, there has been a 52 percent fall in HIV infections among children. A 33 percent dropdown is seen in newly infected adults and children altogether.
