Every day, Every Hour, Every 30 Minute: One Rape Case Reported In India


BANGALORE: Rape, one of the most grievous and horrific forms of sexual violence against women is increasing in a developing country like India. Today, the frequency of such violence is so high that over 57 rapes are reported every day in a way there are one rape every 30 minutes.

This mean the average of such case comes upto  more than two rapes every hour, every day, as per the 13-year analysis of crime data compiled by a Commonwealth Human Rights Initiative. This in a way highlights the pathetic state of women’s safety in the country.

According to the study, between the years 2001 and 2013, 272,844 rape cases had been registered across the country that is a rape has taken place every 25 minutes in India over the past 13 years.

Out of which, the capital New Delhi alone accounted for 8,060 rapes during this period, registering a 329 percent increase from 2001 to 2013.

The most recently released UN data revealed that India figures third among top 10 countries where highest number of rape have taken place in 2010 while in cases of murder, the country comes second in 2012. The data further highlights that there were 1.8 cases of rape per lakh population in India.

The CHRI report also disclosed that so far 5,101 people were convicted of rape in 2013 which is an increase of just 13 percent as compared with the previous year. However, the overall rate of convictions for rape and sexual molestation remained terribly low, the report added.

Such inhuman act can be totally eradicated from the system only after implementing tougher laws against rape and sexual harassment in India.
