Dhoti, Pyjama, Slippers Still a Big No in India's Elite Clubs; Spark Outrage

BANGALORE:  India’s prominent personalities like Former Prime Minister HD Deve Gowda, DMK chief M Karunanidhi and Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav are most of the time adorn with traditional Indian wear like dhoti and pyjama. As times, people wearing such outfits are barred from entering most of the elite clubs in the country. This is because it is not an appropriate dress for the most of the elite clubs in the country.

The recent incident where dhoti-clad Judge of the Madras High Court was refused entry at a club in Chennai has stoked a controversy. Many political parties including DMK condemned the incident and urged the government to take legal action against such clubs.

Madras High Court Judge, Justice D Hariparanthaman was denied entry into the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association Club recently for wearing dhoti.

When he alighted from his official car at the club premises to participate in a book release function organized by T S Arunachalam, a former Chief Justice of the High Court, some staff of the club told him that he could not enter the premises wearing dhoti as they had instructions from the office-bearers not to allow anyone in the premises who violated the club's dress code.
