Delhi's Growing Pollution Creates Major Concern for Indian Government

BENGALURU: It’s a nightmare for people in north when winter arrives; the contaminated air becomes more toxic causing threat to more than 200 million people.

Who can be held responsible for it? Irony is farmers who feed the nation are blamed for burning agricultural waste in their fields. That further leads to pollution across the mega cities like New Delhi, Lucknow, and Allahabad.

It has been noticed that when the monsoon gets over, left-over paddy straw in the huge land of paddy fields are burnt especially in Haryana and Punjab. The intensity of the fire is so much so that satellites in the space can record their presence.

The satellite images sports massive trail of smoke covering north India, notifying threat across the capital city of India. Previous winter, Chief Justice of India had taken initiatives by car-pooling to control the pollution; despite the noble program pollution couldn’t be controlled. Delhi’s air has been polluted with noxious substance released by automobiles, thermal power plants, industry and burnt fields. Biggest concern is nobody knows which industry is contributing more towards pollution.

In this scenario, farmers are the easy target to blame without knowing the fact behind why agricultural wastes are burnt. Crop harvested during post-monsoon are sold to the government at minimum price leaving behind straws to farmers. Unfortunately, straws from paddy comprises large amount of silica which is bad for health and is very hard to eat. Moving ahead, when farmers think of planting new crop, they do not have any option other than burning agricultural waste.

Blazing of straw after the harvesting is a regular routine in the state in order to ensure early plantation of next crop. So if anyone has to be blamed it’s the government and not the farmers, as reported by State of Environment of Punjab published by the local government.

To overcome this deadly situation government has to take innovative measures like restructuring agricultural economy in order to save citizens from choking to death across Delhi and north India.
