Cities Have Less Working Women than Villages

Bangalore: Women have been a part of the country’s work force for a long time now, but what’s new is that women in rural parts of India form a larger part of this work force than the women living in the cities. As per second annual report on Employment and Unemployment Survey 2012, there are 280 women employed in rural parts of the country unlike just 179 women employed in cities for every 1000 persons. The national average of the employed women including both rural and urban population is estimated to be 254 persons per 1000 persons.

Among the men the labour force participation rate per 1000 was estimated to be 788 in rural India and in the cities it was 733, which still shows that more are employed in the villages.

The Labour Force Participation Rate (LFPR) is a matter of concern due to the global financial crisis of 2007-08.

The records for the survey is collected from 1, 28,298 household samples, out of these 81,430 are in the rural sect and the rest 46,868 households from the urban sect.

The report expresses its dismay to see women in the country especially ones in the cities with such low rate of labor force participation. The Usual Principal Status (UPS) approach showed 17.9 percent women in cities who are part of the labour force, as employed or available for service where as in case of urban men it is 73.3 percent.
