Ban Ki-Moon Ducks Out J&K Dispute in his UNGA Speech

BENGALURU: Pakistan received a huge diplomatic setback despite putting on a lot of efforts, as UN Secretary General completely ignored discussion on J&K dispute while addressing the 71st session of the UNGA. Ban Ki-moon in his opening statement mentioned his concerns in the areas of West Asia and Syria without mentioning India-Pakistan or J&K. This is a big setback for Nawaz Sharif, who is pushing hard, so the world can keep an eye on J&K. As reported by TOI, Pakistani PM will surely point at India in his speech in UNGA on 21 September.

No mention of J&K in Ban Ki-moon’s speech is good news for India as Pakistan is making repeated requests to UN to intervene in the disputed territories of Jammu & Kashmir. The Indian external affairs minister will address the session on 26th September and will lead the countries stand against the neighboring country, after the recent attack on Uri where 18 brave Indian soldiers died.

Another diplomatic success came for India as BRICS group at UN accepted the Comprehensive Convention on International Terrorism (CCIT) treaty proposed by India. This is the first time that a powerful group called for early acceptance of treaty in front of the global community. However, the Indo-Pak face off will start after Nawaz Sharif’s address on 21 September where he is all set to raise the Kashmir issue and might blame India for human rights violations in the Kashmir valley.

In Geneva, while addressing at United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC), the ambassadors of both India and Pakistan had a heated exchange of thoughts. Pakistan blamed India for ongoing intricacies in Kashmir by calling terrorist Burhan Muzaffar Wani as a youth leader. In reply Indian ambassador Alok Ranjan Jha lashed out at Pakistani envoy by replying them that ‘the country torturing Balochi people should not be crying for human rights violations in our territory’. Many countries support India’s fight against terror and ask Pakistan to stop sponsoring terrorism.
