Aiming to Overpower China, Trump is Likely to Build Strong Relations with India

BENGALURU: As a part of Donald Trump’s strategy to suppress China, the Indo-U.S. relation is expected to become stronger overtime. On the other hand, according to the Chinese state media, due to Delhi’s interest in an independent foreign policy, Trump’s intentions will have low impact on Beijing.

An article in the state-run Global Timestitled 'Trump may be cool to alliance with Delhi' states, "With the purpose of stabilizing the external situation and straightening out problems at home, the Trump administration will seek an improving relationship with India."

However, the article mentioned that India will not be able to support the US in the matter due to its own domestic problems; decreasing the US's enthusiasm to build a quasi-alliance. Furthermore, it said that India "as a global power sticking to non-alignment diplomacy" will not set a goal of "allying with the US in suppressing China as the US hopes".

According to the article, there are unbridgeable differences between the American intentions for building a close relationship with India with an aim to balance China, and India's idea of building an independent diplomacy towards China and the US.

While trying to tackle global challenges such as nuclear proliferation, climate change and terrorism, the US may seek India’s help in making greater contributions to the specific fields which only the US is concerned about, the article said.

Pinpointing the current limitations that exist between the US-India relations under the Trump rule, the article indicatedthat it will have a "limited impact on China".
