After French and German, It's Now Chinese that Interests IIM-A Students

Bangalore: The students at the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad (IIM-A) are now opting to learn one of the most difficult languages in the world, which is Mandarin.

Around 70 second-year students out of 380 have opted to learn Chinese as a foreign language this year in order to develop their job prospects, reported Chitra Unnithan for TNN. Increasing number of students are choosing the language as an elective in comparison to languages like French and German, which were considered trendy by many on campus.

Further, the 25-session course got divided into two classes this year in order to harbor students for the elective. A student Sunil Chhipa, who enrolled himself for Business Chinese, said "China is the second best option to work for me after India. I took up the elective based on student feedback from previous years. The course has been designed to give us a brief idea on the language, cultural differences, norms and business environment in China," as reported by TNN.

The course that was introduced in 2009 with a class of 45 students has got an overwhelming response and therefore the institute also plans to introduce a course on 'Doing Business with China'.
