AIIMS Students Take Pledge to Promote Organ Donation

BANGALORE: It is a well known fact that the dignified deed of donating organs can extend lives up to 50 other human beings and also can give a new life to a person. But a developing country like India, due to its lack of cultural awareness and reliable medical infrastructure, is still far away from the concept of organ donation and as such, just a count of 0.16 per million population of organ donors exist in this country. To combat this, sections of undergraduate doctors from AIIMS, India’s premiere medical institute, pledge to promote organ donation, reports Bindu Shajan Perappadan of The Hindu.

‘Infest’, the annual cul fest of AIIMS organized by ORBO, witnessed   around hundred-odd students at the institute taking a formal oath and promising to be an agent of change by donating their organs.

Rajeev Makhuri, senior organ transplant coordinator, ORBO said, “The idea is to spread awareness about the need to donate organs to bridge the gap between the demand and supply. Doctors should practice what they preach to motivate people to come forward and take pledge to donate their organs,” reports PTI.

The ORBO unit maintains a long list of fatally ill patients who need to undergo transplants, donor registration, matching of recipients with donor, co-ordination from procurement of organs to transplantation.
