A List of 31 Least Prosperous Countries in the World


Bengaluru: The Legatum Institute, a London Based think tank releases an annual prosperity index featuring 142 countries in terms of their prosperity. This index considers 89 different variables like unemployment rates, public opinion on political freedom and many more. On the basis of Legatum Institute’s Prosperity Index, here’s a list of 31 countries ranked in reverse order, where number one represents the least prosperous country, reports Business Insider.
Central African Republic (CAR)

The Central African Republic finished last in entrepreneurship, education and health. This means that CAR is the least prosperous country according to the Legatum Institute.

Afghanistan

According to a survey, Afghanistan has the worst governance amongst all countries and is second worst in terms of safety and security as it is ravaged by war for decades. These factors make Afghanistan the second least prosperous country.

Haiti

Having hit by an earth quake in 2010, the country has never truly recovered from it. Haiti also has a dreadful health rating, poor governance and inferior levels of personal freedom making it the third least prosperous country.

Chad

Chad was the second least prosperous country among all the previous year. The country has climbed two places due to an improved economy this year.

Burundi

Only three countries in the list have scored less than Burundi in the economy sub index this year. It also recorded very poor scores in the social capital and health indexes which places the country 5th in the list.

Democratic Republic of Congo

The Democratic Republic of Congo has been ranked as the most unsafe country in the whole prosperity index on the basis of its citizen’s opinions.

Syria

The brutal civil war and the rise of ISIS have pushed the country steadily down the rankings as it once was ranked within the top 90 countries in the world.

Yemen

Yemen has the worst scores in the levels of personal freedom and is also one of the ten worst economies according to the prosperity index.

Sudan

Sudan has recorded the second least scores in the personal freedom index and has four places in the list in comparison to last year’s Prosperity Index list.

Angola

Angola falls in the bottom ten for six of the eight sub indexes taken into consideration by Legatum Institute’s survey.

Liberia

The Ebola virus epidemic in Liberia in 2008 is one of the prime reasons for the country being officially the worst economy according to the prosperity index.

Guinea

Guinea has the second worst economy above Liberia and has poor scores in the entrepreneurship sub index according the prosperity survey.

Pakistan

Our neighbors, Pakistan, were ranked as the fifth most unsafe countries in the world in spite of having fairly good scores for economy and entrepreneurship.

Togo

Togo is having the worst ratings in the social capital index in comparison to other nations according to the prosperity index.

Zimbabwe

Zimbabwe’s performance in the economy sub index has been poor due to the impact of the hyperinflation encountered by the country for much of the early 21st century.

Republic of Congo

The Republic of Congo has a much degraded rating in the Health sub index of the prosperity index.

Ethiopia

Ethiopia experienced inferiority in the entrepreneurship and bad scores in the education sub index which accounts for its presence in the list.

Nigeria

Nigeria is one of Africa’s most powerful economies and is one of the five most unsafe countries according to the survey.

Sierra Leone

Sierra Leone is the fourth country from bottom in the health sub index as the West African nation was hit by the Ebola crisis.

Iraq

It is not a surprise to witness Iraq in the bottom ten of the security and safety index due to presence of the ISIS.

Malawi

According to the prosperity index, Malawi has the fifth worst economy among all nations surveyed.

Mauritania

This North African country has poor ratings in the governance and personal freedom sub indexes which is a prime reason for Mauritania’s inclusion in the list.

Djibouti

Djibouti has a struggling economy and education system, and also has inferior ratings in the entrepreneurship sub index of the prosperity survey.

Mozambique

Mozambique falls under the ten worst countries in terms of healthcare and only fewer than 15 countries have worse education indexes than this country.

Ivory Coast

The country is the world’s 25th least prosperous due to poor ratings in the social capital and education sub index of the prosperity survey.

Tanzania

Tanzania has bad scores in the health and education sub indexes which makes it one of the least prosperous countries in the world.

Cameroon

Cameroon is another Central African Republic country that features near the bottom of the prosperity index and has low scores in all sub indexes of the survey.

Uganda

Uganda has poor ratings for its poor human rights record and has good scores in the social capital sub index.

Niger

Niger was ranked third from bottom in the entrepreneurship and education sub indexes, and also experiences a heavy presence of terrorists group, Boko Haram.

Zambia

When it comes to health, only six countries in the whole prosperity index scored worse than Zambia. The country enjoys good levels of social capital, governance and personal freedom.

Cambodia

Cambodia scored poorly in the personal freedom and social capital categories which enforces the country’s entrance in the list of the least prosperous countries.
