BANGALORE:  In a country, which is known for its cricketing culture and predicted to have no future for any other sportsperson, we have seen a drastic change over the years.  Indians have made it to the top of various sporting events and made the country proud.

But over the past a few years’ sportswomen from the country have dominated their respective games. Thus let us look at some legendary women who are contributing to the big change in Indian sporting culture and being an inspiration to millions of youngsters in the country as listed by Indiatimes.

Sania Mirza

The Indian queen of Tennis courts, Sania Mirza is standing on top of the world in women doubles. 2015 has been a dream run for Sania with doubles partner Martina Hingis, accomplishing 9 title wins including Wimbledon and U.S. Open.

The 28 year old has played a crucial role in setting a target for girls who dream of making it big in Tennis. She is also known for raising voice against biased media reporting and one of the first women athletes in the country to get highly paid for endorsements.

Saina Nehwal

Saina Nehwal changed the face of badminton in the country and became the inspiration for many to take up the sport. Her achievements in the game has never been a cake walk, breaking the ‘great wall’ of Chinese dominance in the game and rising to the top made huge fan following for this 25 year old from Hyderabad.

After the legendary Prakash Padukone she became the first Indian to achieve the number one spot in the game. The Olympic Bronze medalist has also won medals in prestigious tournaments like, World championship, Asian games, Asian championship, and Commonwealth games and has won all the major tournament titles including a historical final entry to the 2015 All England.

Saba Anjum

Saba Anjum is a role model for all the women Hockey players in the country who hails from a small town. Hailing from Keladadi, Durg Chhattisgarh she made it big to the sporting map of the nation. The former Forward of the team was the youngest of participants in hockey competition at the 2002 Commonwealth Games in Manchester and the team managed to win a gold medal in the tournament.

She has represented India in many other international tournaments like Asian Games, Asia Cup Delhi, Commonwealth Games, Junior World Cup Buenos Aires and Australian Test Series and New Zealand Tour. She has been honored with Padma Shri and Arjuna award.

Mithali Raj

The Golden girl of Indian cricket, Mithali Raj is the current captain of the Indian omen cricket team. The 32 year old all-rounder has more than 5000 runs from 153 ODIs with 5 centuries and 37 half centuries on her name. In a male dominating sport she has proved to the world that passion is all that matters.

The second women to achieve 5000 runs feet in ODI women cricket is also the first women from Asia to score a double ton in Test match and held the record for the highest score in Women's Tests - 214 against England, 2002 - that stood for 19 months.

PV Sindhu

The twenty year old new badminton sensation from Hyderabad, PV Sindhu is all focused to make it big in the 2016 Rio Olympics. Sindhu became the first ever Indian woman to win a medal in singles at the World Championships and India's first singles medal since Prakash Padukone won bronze in 1983, in 2015.

Sindhu also trains under Pullela Gopichand, at Gopichand’s academy where her senior Saina Nehwal emerged from. With her tremendous performances she broke in to the top 20 of BWF rankings in no time and still remains at 3 rd spot in the BWF junior rankings.

Arunima Sinha

Arunima Sinha is an inspiration for all those women who have been a victim of any unfortunate incident. A former national level Volleyball and Football player Arunima was pushed out of a general coach of the train by thieves wanting to snatch her bag and gold chain in 2011. As a result, one of her legs had to be amputated below the knee.

But the sportswomen in her decided never to give it up. Now she is acknowledged as the first female amputee to climb Mount Everest. Her book "Born again on the mountain" was launched in 2014 by PM Narendra Modi and she has also been awarded Padma Shri.

MC Mary Kom

Nick named "Magnificent Mary", MC Mary Kom have created history by being the only woman boxer to have won a medal in each one of the six world championships. The five times World champion and Olympics Bronze medalist is all set to box it out in Rio 2015.

Mother of two kids at the 32 year old Mary is being an inspiration for all Indian women who are bond to family commitments and forget to achieve their dreams. She became the first Indian woman boxer to get a Gold Medal in the Asian Games in 2014 in Incheon, South Korea. She is also the reason behind many girls from small towns are taking up boxing as a profession.

Geeta Phogat

The 26 years old Wrestler from Haryana became the first female wrestler from India to win gold medal in women's wrestling in the 55 kg freestyle category at the 2010 Commonwealth Games. She is also the first-ever Indian woman wrestler to have qualified for the Olympics.

 In a society where women are supposed to be doing households she fought against the odds with the support of her father, Mahavir Singh a former wrestler himself and also her coach. She once stated that "I was told wrestling is a man's sport. But I have proved that women can wrestle and win medals as well, you can't ignore women anymore."
