50 Percent Youngsters Aged 18-19 Yet To Exercise Voting Rights

Bangalore: Delhi, the capital of India gives a peanut-size statistics when it comes to youth enrollment to cast vote. As per the analysis from Census 2011 and the data received from the office of the Delhi’s chief electoral officer, almost half of the youngsters from Delhi have not registered themselves to exercise their voting right in the upcoming assembly elections, reports TOI.

Surprisingly, this staggering figure of fewer enrollments by the youth arises amidst growing political awareness and activism among the youngster, like the recent protests led by the  youth and the new tool like social media, which is extensively regarded as an effective political tool for mobilizing the younger generations.

The latest electoral roll data released in Delhi states that just 3.6 lakh of those enrolled to vote in the assembly elections are in the age group 18 or 19. They constitute upto 3 percent of the total number of electorates in Delhi. But, on the other hand, Census data disclose that there were 6.4 lakh people aged 16-17. Taking this into consideration, the youth figures for 2013 should be close to considerably higher number.
