5 Reasons for Mamata Banerjee's Sweeping Win

BENGALURU: In spite of a complete range of scams from the Saradha Ponzi scam that affected nearly two million people to the Trident Scam by the Kolkata Municipal Corporation, Mamata Banerjee stormed her way back to power. Here’s a look at the 5 factors that may have spring-boarded the Trinamool Congress (TMC) supremo to reign big in Bengal, reports ET.

Congress-Communist Alliance in Bengal

“Congress and Communist ready to do anything to oust the “despotic and autocratic” rule of the Trinamool Congress and Mamata Banerjee.” This was the highly marketed tagline upon which the alliance between the Indian National Congress and Communist Party of India, two arch rivals in Indian politics for decades was formed. The alliance which was late seems more like an electoral arrangement and lacked true spirit which the voters caught on to. The intent was to transfer votes to the left which did not happen with Congress retaining seats in its pocket boroughs. In spite of strong opposition from either sides, the association seemed imperative for both parties but led to many voters being driven towards Trinamool Congress.

Welfare Schemes for Youth

TMC initiated different welfare schemes for youth and students in a bid to expand its support base. ‘Kanyashree scheme’ and 'Sabuj Sathi’ scheme added to her already strong popularity. The Kanyashree scheme offered monthly scholarship of Rs 750 to girl students from financially weak families while the 'Sabuj Sathi’ scheme distributed cycles to students. Also, the Mamata-led government rolled out a monthly dole of Rs 1,500 to one lakh for unemployed youth in the state under the 'Yuvashree' scheme.
