5 Pilgrimage Centres In India Targeted By Terrorists


Bangalore: Terror has no definition and the word ‘Terrorism’ creates fear into the hearts of many. This very word has been impairing the peace and security of the nation. Moreover, when it comes to attacks on religious shrines and areas, devotees become more emotional and violent, resulting in a frightening situation. Over the centuries there were many attacks on the religious structures and pilgrimage sites in India, ranging from lighter ones to major. Let’s have a look at some of the famous Indian temples which were hit by terrorist attacks, as compiled by India TV.

Akshardham Temple, Gujarat

The temple of Akshardam in Gandhinagar of Gujarat was attacked by two heavily armed terrorists in the year 2002, which resulted in the death of 29 devotees and more than 80 devotees were injured. They entered the temple with hand grenades and started firing, killing a woman and a temple volunteer immediately. There were about 600 devotees in the temple during the time and the quick action of the temple authorities avoided any further attack. The security forces killed the two terrorists in an operation the same night. After 8 years of the incident David Headley, an associate of Lashkar-e-Taiba confessed to the National Investigation Academy that a LeT terrorist named Muzammil was behind the attack.
