INS Vikrant- Indigenous Aircraft Carrier

India recently launched INS Vikrant, which is the first Vikrant-class aircraft carrier built entirely in India, thus making a grand entry into an elite club of nations capable of carrying out construction of such huge size and magnitude.

INS Vikrant will go for extensive trials in 2016 and is expected be commissioned into the navy by the end of 2018.

INS Vikrant is 262 meters long, 60 meters wide, and displaces about 40,000 metric tons. It features a Short Take-Off But Arrested Recovery (STOBAR) configuration with a ski-jump. It is expected to carry an air group of up to 36 aircraft, primarily the Mikoyan MiG-29K and the naval variant of the HAL Tejas Mark 2, besides carrying 10 Kamov Ka-31 or Westland Sea King helicopters.

Vikrant is powered by four gas turbines on two shafts, generating in excess of 80 megawatts of power.
